This 9-week course will explore how cultural and neuroscientific approaches to music can coexist and how music perception engages the brain; evolutionary studies of music; theories on the adaptive role that musical behavior played in human evolution; the relationship between music and emotion; the different ways in which music can express emotion and how music can evoke emotion in listeners; the fundamental building blocks of music – pitch and timber – and how the perception of musical sounds involves complex mental processing; how music cognition develops in normal individuals and how it goes awry in people with neurological disorders; the relationship between music and neural rehabilitation, and how human song compares to the songs of other animals.
